Poema: No te rindas... Mario Benedetti
No te rindas....
De alcanzar y comenzar de nuevo,
Aceptar tus sombras,
Enterrar tus miedos,

My favorite Holidays
My Favorite Holidays
My
favorite holidays are a time of enjoyment and reflection which I share with my
family and good friends. Every year, our calendar is renewed and shows us
festive dates to enjoy. It's like "a new beginning". I enjoy the
holidays. Especially Christmas, New Year, and Three Kings Day. An additional
reason is, I grew up in a Catholic Christian family and from I was a child, my
parents taught me the magic of Christmas. Before to December 25th, my family
and I decorated our home with a Christmas tree and "El pesebre" which
is a representation of the birth of the baby Jesus. When Christmas day arrives,
we get together and prepare typical Venezuelan Christmas dishes, like: hallaca,
ham bread, chicken salad, pieces of smoked cheese and ham, hot chocolate. All
this is delicious. Our celebration is on December 24th at night and
when the midnight is coming, we give us a big hug and say, “Merry Christmas”. Furthermore,
we also exchange gifts after midnight. December 31st is like
December 24th. On this day, we get together at night. We normally
dance, share with the family and when it is midnight, we give each other a big
hug and say, “Happy New Year”. We also have some customs such as: "holding
money in the right hand" so that the new year brings us "Money",
wearing yellow underwear, eating 12 grapes, and making wishes, walking in the
street with a suitcase. We also do other things in the new year, which are
somewhat "Superstitious”, but they are passed from generation to
generation. December 6th, Three Kings Day. It is a simpler day, but
it is also special for me. On this day, the children woke up early. They go to
the Christmas tree and receive gifts, then we ate a rich breakfast. Finally, my
favorite holidays are very important for me because I share with my family and
I have rest, enjoy, and reflect.
Comfort Food
For
me, Comfort food is a special food that reminds me people, places, and times.
It makes me feel happy and connected with people that I love. My comfort food
is “Hallaca”. It is a typical Venezuelan dish of Christmas Season, but people
sometimes eat it in another times.
Hallaca
is a thin layer of corn dough stuffed with beef, pork, and chicken. It also has
ingredients, such as onion rings, bell pepper, raisins, and green olives. Then we
wrap it in plantain leaves, tie, and boil for two or three hours. It is like
tamales. In my country, Preparing Hallacas is different depending
on the state and family tradition. For example, my mother has her special
recipe, and for me, it’s the best. I also enjoy making with my
husband our own recipe.
Maybe,
making hallacas is a long process, but
the result is delicious. Hallaca is a salty food, and it is not
healthy, and it is not spicy. I like to eat hallacas
during December month. I usually eat hallacas when my family and I are
sharing Christmas holiday. Finally, Hallaca is important to me because it connects
me with my country, my culture, and my family.
Creaciones interesantes para recordar.
My favorite food is the Pabellon Criollo,
a typical Venezuelan dish. This delicious dish is eaten for lunch. It consists
of white rice, black beans, shredded meat, fried egg, and fried plantain. Anyway,
this dish has many ingredients, but each ingredient is added in small
proportions. Also, some people substitute one ingredient for another. For
example, my mother sometimes adds salad instead of meat. This depends on your
tastes. In addition, I add a natural juice like Papelon. Papelon is a lemon and
brown sugar drink. I love the combination of salty and sweet flavors. I also
like to add some grated cheese to the black beans. I used to eat it once a week
when I was in my country. However, I eat it once a month here in the United
States. As you can see, Pabellon Criollo is my favorite food because it tastes
great and smells delicious.
